Silat and the Islamic Heritage of the Malay World

MMS Editorial · September 2, 2026 · 10 min read

Silat developed in a region where Islam shaped culture for centuries. This article traces how faith and martial tradition came to be intertwined.

Across the Malay archipelago, silat developed alongside, and was influenced by, the spread of Islam. Many traditions open training with prayer and teach adab as part of the curriculum.

The Minangkabau context

In West Sumatra, the Minangkabau maintained silat as part of a broader cultural education, often associated with the surau (prayer house), where young men learned religion, custom and self-defence together.
